Is Your BIP Really Working?

Let’s Talk About Proactive Strategies That Actually Support Student Success

When it comes to supporting students with challenging behaviors, Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) are critical tools. But far too often, these plans include vague or ineffective proactive strategies—broad, generic responses that don’t truly reflect the student’s needs or the root cause of the behavior. Sound familiar?

You’re not alone. Many educators and school teams default to generic interventions that sound good on paper but don’t hold up in practice. Strategies like “provide breaks” or “offer choices” are only helpful when they are thoughtfully linked to the function of behavior and the skills being taught. Without that connection, we risk wasting time, losing staff buy-in, and—most importantly—missing opportunities to help students be successful.

Why Proactive Strategies Matter

Setting events and antecedent interventions are your first line of defense. These strategies are proactive, preventative, and can be incredibly powerful—but only if they’re chosen with intention and precision.

To be effective, your proactive strategies must be:

  • Function-based – Addressing the “why” behind the behavior.

  • Linked to skill-building – Supporting the teaching and reinforcement of replacement behaviors.

  • Measurable and actionable – So implementation can be monitored and refined.

  • Consistently feasible – Practical enough for daily use by all staff.

  • Strength-based – Framed around what the student can do, not just what they shouldn’t do.

Don’t Settle for a BIP That Doesn’t Work

If your current strategies aren’t checking all these boxes, it’s time to rethink and refresh your approach. Every child deserves a plan that works—and every educator deserves tools that are clear, supportive, and backed by data that is used to make decisions and lasting change.

Let’s collaborate to build effective, simple, and evidence-informed BIPs that include built-in data collection systems to monitor progress and guide decision-making. Together, we can shift from reactive to truly proactive behavior support.
